Varsity Football: Most Challenging Season Ever

The Brunswick football team will be facing what many consider to be its most challenging schedule ever as the New England Prep Football League embarks upon its first season of competition in the fall of 2021.

The Bruins’ new-look schedule includes former Erickson League rivals Trinity Pawling, Salisbury, and Avon Old Farms, in addition to familiar foes such as Cheshire Academy, Williston-Northampton, and Phillips Andover. New to the schedule are Hun School of Princeton, Suffield Academy, and Wyoming-Seminary.

Brunswick returns some good experience up front in four-year starter (and captain) Michael Burton, a Georgetown University commit, who will anchor the offensive line from his position at center. He will be joined by veterans Miles Walker and Cliff Belknap, both of whom have plenty of varsity experience. Newcomer Will Janis, senior Tyler Wilson, and sophomores Matty Augustine and Reed Eddy round out the unit. The group hopes to open holes for a trio of senior running backs: Kha'lil Eason, Hunter Clark, and Chris Gaine will all see time in the backfield along with senior QB and Georgetown commit Danny Lauter. Gaine will also serve as the backup quarterback.

A large receiving corps hopes to haul in Lauter's passes. The unit is led by senior captain Ashton Winegardner, who saw significant varsity minutes as a sophomore. Veteran juniors Jason Agudelo and Tomas Delgado should feature prominently in the passing attack and will be joined by fellow juniors Nick Burns and William MacGillivray and senior Logan Mueller. Seniors Jalen Johnson and Kha'lil Eason will also see some time at different receiver positions. Hauling in passes and setting blocks from the tight end position will be senior Michael Neviera and juniors Riley Gilsenan and Liam Butler.

Defensively, the Bruins will be captained by seniors Charlie Johnson and George Villis. The defensive unit, like the team, has many seniors who will be seeing their first true varsity action after COVID cancelled last year's season.

Johnson will lead a defensive backfield that will feature classmates Jalen Johnson, Kha'lil Eason, Wells Faulstich, and Will O'Connor along with underclassmen Blaine McClure and Hudson Hausman.

Villis will be joined at his linebacker position by fellow seniors Hunter Clark, Jamie Resitieri, and Jack Stemerman along with a host of underclassmen who are vying for playing time.

The defensive line is an untested group featuring some combination of seniors Darrell Warren, Michael Neviera, and Lyndon Gay, who will be joined by two new dynamic juniors, Jesse Schutzman and Taylor Primack. New to the team are seniors Sam Swigart and Fritz Sanger, who will also compete for playing time on the defensive line. Junior Jurgis Schmedlen provides depth at the position.
