Brunswick outlasted Belmont Hill in the lacrosse team’s season opener by a score of 11-10 in a game played in Belmont, Mass., on Friday afternoon.
A back-and-forth first half saw the Bruins finish the second quarter on a five-goal run to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
In the second half, Belmont closed the gap to 7-5 in the first minute of the third quarter. Four minutes later, Coulter Mackesy responded with a low-angle goal from goal-line extended. Jackson Wolfram extended Brunswick’s lead to 9-6 with his second of the game and of his varsity career, and Mackesy added another to make it 10-6 ’Wick after three.
The first two goals of the fourth quarter were scored by Belmont Hill to make it 10-8. After three minutes without a goal, Mackesy fed Lucas Delgado for a 10-yard step down — 11-8 Brunswick. The final two goals of the game were scored by Belmont Hill, but a strong defensive stand with seconds left solidified the win for Brunswick.
