Five Squash Players Named All-American

Brunswick senior Dana Santry, junior Coulter Mackesy and sophomore David Beeson join seniors Brian Leonard and Nick Spizzirri as 2019-2020 High School All-Americans, as announced by US Squash recently.

Santry, Mackesy and Beeson are first-time awardees, while both Leonard and Spizzirri are three-time winners of the prestigious national accolade.

This past season the quintet spearheaded the Bruins’ undefeated run to the program’s fifth HEAD U.S. High School Team Championship and 18th NEPSAC Class A crown.

Recipients are selected through two pathways: players voted on by coaches and league administrators of US Squash-accredited high school leagues or final point rankings from tournaments during the season for junior players in the U19 (top eight) and U17 (top four) divisions.

This year, Spizzirri was ranked #1 overall in the U19, and is the first-ever Brunswick player to hold that distinction. Last year, Spizzirri earned All-American honors through both pathways. In 2017-18, the Greenwich resident was a top-four finisher in the U17 national ranking for a third All-American honor.

Leonard, who never lost a high school match in four years at Brunswick (49-0), was ranked #4 overall in the U19. Leonard, hailing from Harrison, N.Y., finished in sixth-place overall in U19 action last season and posted a top-four ranking in the U17 in 2017-18 to account for the three All-American nods.

Santry, a Greenwich resident, finished #3 in the final U19 national rankings this year to earn All-American honors.

Collectively, Santry, Leonard and Spizzirri own a sterling record of 128-5, helping longtime coach Jim Stephens win three of the program’s five national titles.

Beeson, from Riverside, picked-up an All-American nod as a top-four finisher in U17 play this season, while Mackesy, from Bronxville, N.Y., was selected by the coaches and league administrators from the NEISA for All-American recognition.

Brunswick now boasts a total of eight All-Americans, led by a pair of three-time winners in Spizzirri and Leonard, as David Yacobucci ’16 is a two-time All-American. Santry, Mackesy, and Beeson join solo winners Max Finkelstein ’18 and Hayes Murphy ’14 on the list of All-Americans for Coach Stephens, who is retiring this year after 35 seasons of leading the team.
