After 35 years of success leading the Brunswick squash team, legendary coach Jim Stephens won the penultimate home match of his career inside the squash center that bears his name, as the Bruins dispatched Taft on Senior Day on Saturday, 7-0.
“I feel very fortunate to have coached hundreds of boys over 35 years”, said Stephens. “My goal was always to provide the boys with a lifelong game that would develop their character and values for their life after Brunswick.
Reflecting on his final team and final season, the longtime coach said, "This year’s varsity squash team is without doubt, the best team Brunswick has ever had.”
Saturday's win gives the Bruins a 4-0 regular season mark ahead of their home finale against Kent (14-0) on Wednesday, Feb 12.
Brunswick, the top-rated squad in the country, will continue its season at the 2020 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships later this month in Hartford, Conn. The Bruins, owners of a sterling, 68-1 mark dating back to 2014, appeared in 12-straight national finals and won four of the last five national championships (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019).
Saturday’s game was also the final home contest for four senior captains Pierce Henderson, Brian Leonard, Dana Santry, Nick Spizzirri, along with fellow classmates Will McLaren and Gabe Merha.
