Basketball Rallies to Victory

Despite a shortened roster due to injuries, Brunswick erased an 11-point deficit in the second half to beat Salisbury on Saturday in Dann Gym, 59-58. The Bruins (7-8) knocked two strong teams on consecutive days, as Storm King (65-61 win on Friday) and Salisbury hold a combined record of 19-5.

Brunswick held an early 8-7 lead before the Knights (10-3) countered with a short burst to take a 13-8 lead near the midway point of the first half. Salisbury used a 14-4 run to extend its advantage to 27-12 with under four minutes left in the half. The Bruins closed out the frame with an impressive 12-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Henry Caponiti that completed the first half scoring at 29-24.

By the 9:45 mark of the second half, the Knights’ lead ballooned to a game-high 11, as the visitors built a 44-33 lead over Brunswick.

Logan Galletta put the Bruins on his back as the guard netted the next eight points of the game, including a pair of three-pointers, cutting the Salisbury advantage to 44-41 with 7:12 left.

Brunswick continued to trail in the game until Galletta fed Dan Arnold for a game-tying lay-up (54-54) with 3:14 remaining in the game.

The two teams exchanged buckets before Galletta nailed the go-ahead basket from downtown, giving Brunswick a 59-56 lead at the 1:15 mark.

Each team alternated turnovers ahead of a Salisbury lay-up that set the score at 59-58 with 29.8 seconds on the clock.

Needing the ball and holding just three team fouls, the Knights started to foul the Bruins. After the first non-shooting foul, Brunswick turned the ball over, but Salisbury missed the go-ahead three-pointer as the Bruins gained possession. The Knights fouled twice more ahead of a key time-out by Brunswick with 5.0 seconds left to play. On the ensuing in-bounds pass, the Bruins collected the ball in their back court and dribbled out the final seconds for the win.

Galletta led the Bruins with 17 points, netting 15 in the second half. Caponiti and James Sealy added a dozen apiece, while Arnold scored 10 points.
