Basketball Holds Off Late Rally

Brunswick saw a comfortable, 19-point second-half lead over Rye CDS get trimmed to just one point (56-55) with 0:05 remaining on Wednesday in Dann Gym. In the final seconds, the Bruins hit a pair of free throws and a buzzer-beating three-pointer to seal the league win over the Wildcats, 61-55.

The FAA win by Brunswick (3-7, 2-2) avenges an 84-58 defeat by Rye CDS (3-4, 1-2) back in December.

Colin Mulshine’s short runner gave the Bruins their largest lead (33-18) and capped the scoring in the first half.

The Brunswick lead blossomed to 19 points (38-19) on fast-break lay-up by James Sealy with 13:40 left to play in the second half.

The Wildcats mounted their rally with a 20-10 run over the next seven minutes, trimming the Bruins’ lead to single digits (48-39) on a short jumper with 6:35 remaining. The visitors kept up the pressure down the stretch with a 16-8 surge, narrowing the deficit to one point (56-55) on a three-pointer with five seconds left in the game.

After a time-out, Rye CDS fouled immediately on Brunswick’s in-bounds pass, sending Logan Galletta to the line for a 1-and-1 opportunity. Galletta missed the front end, but a lane violation by the Wildcats kept Galletta on the charity stripe. Galletta sank both ends of the 1-and-1 to give the Bruins a 58-55 lead with 0:04 left to play. Kevonne Wilder stole the in-bounds pass and fed Mulshine for a three-pointer from the left corner as time expired.

Khari Wilson led the Bruins with 14 points, while Mulshine and Galletta each netted a baker’s dozen.
