Eight Football Players Earn Post-Season Accolades

Eight football players picked up postseason recognition from the coaches from the Erickson League as well as the NEPSAC. The eight Bruins earned honors from the Erickson League, led by senior Jalen Madison, the Offensive Player of the Year, and Howard Powell, the Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Seven of the eight players, including Madison and Powell, also picked up All-NEPSAC accolades.

Joining Madison and Powell as All-Erickson League selections are: Kevonne Wilder, George Hill, Nick Winegardner, Michael Burton and Colin Mulshine, as Clayton Ostrover earned honorable mention recognition. Madison, Powell, Wilder and Wingardner were also named to the All-NEPSAC Class A Team, while Hill, Burton and Mulshine were honorable mention picks by the NEPSAC.

The eight players helped the Bruins (8-2, 6-1) reach the NEPSAC’s Todd Marble Bowl, the program’s 14th post-season bowl appearance since 1989 and sixth in the last seven years.

Madison, a running back from Stratford, Conn., led the potent Brunswick ground game this season with career highs in rushing yards (1,376) and touchdowns (18). Madison, an All-Erickson selection last season, ran for a season-high 261 yards against Taft and rushed for a career-best five touchdowns against Williston Northampton. It is the fourth-straight season a Brunswick player earned the Erickson League’s Offensive Player of the Year Award, as Nick Henkel ’18 earned the award in 2016 and 2017 and Cornelius Johnson won the award last season.

Powell, also from Stratford, was a two-way force for Brunswick. Beyond paving the way for a Brunswick offense that averaged 192.1 yards/game rushing as a guard, Powell dominated the trenches as a defensive tackle. Also tabbed as an All-Erickson player in 2018, Powell collected 52 total tackles and led the team in tackles for loss (16) and sacks (7). Powell anchored a defense that held opponents to just 90.2 yards/game rushing.

Wilder, a senior tri-captain from The Bronx, N.Y., excelled in all three phases of the game for the Bruins. Wilder shared the team lead in pass break-ups with six as a defensive back, averaged 8.6 yards a carry and totaled four touchdowns as a running back, led the team in receptions with 32 and made a huge impact as a returner on special teams. Wilder’s 53-yard punt return for a touchdown broke a late 14-14 tie against Hotchkiss, while several other big returns gave the Brunswick offense excellent field position all season long.

Winegardner, in his second season at the helm of the Brunswick offense, led the Bruins to a NEPSAC postseason bowl games each year. The senior signal-caller from Greenwich, posted a career day against Avon Old Farms, as the tri-captain threw for a personal-best 258 yards, while throwing three touchdown passes against the eventual league champions. For the season, the quarterback completed 95 of 166 passes for 1,158 yards and nine touchdowns, while rushing for 189 yards and a score.

Mulshine, a junior linebacker from Greenwich, led the Bruins defense with four interceptions, while finishing second on the team in tackles with 66. Two of  Mulshine's picks led to quick offensive touchdowns, while Mulshine returned a separate interception for a defensive touchdown against Avon Old Farms. The final pick by Mulshine sealed the victory for Brunswick in the Todd Marble Bowl, as Mulshine’s grab on Bruins' one-yard line halted Governor’s Academy last-second attempt to win the game.

Junior linemen George Hill (Greenwich) and Michael Burton (Wilton, Conn.), both second-year starters on the offensive line, helped the Brunswick offense transition from a pass-oriented team last season to a run-focused squad in 2019. Burton played center on the offense, while Hill played guard, tackle and center, while making an impact on the defensive line, tallying 27 tackles.

Ostrover, a senior linebacker from Greenwich, led the Brunswick defense in tackles with 91 and was second on the team with 11 tackles for loss. The first-year starter tallied double-digit tackles in six games in 2019, including a career-best 17 against Trinity-Pawling.
