Big Plays Propel Football to Victory on Senior Day

Brunswick scored a trio of long touchdowns en route to a decisive 20-7 win over Trinity-Pawling on Senior Day at Cosby Field on Saturday. Jalen Madison led the Bruins rushing attack with 219 yards, as the senior eclipsed 1,000 yards for the season (1,056).

 

The win boosts Brunswick’s overall record to 6-2, as the Bruins own a 4-1 Erickson League mark. Brunswick, with hopes of a possible NEPSCAC post-season bid, wraps up the regular season on the road at Williston Northampton on Saturday, November 9.

 

Madison opened the scoring with a 71-yard touchdown run at the 3:17 mark of the first quarter, capping a three-play 96-yard drive. Senior placekicker Chris Chavez booted the extra-point, as the Bruins took a 7-0 lead.

 

Late in the second quarter, following a turnover on downs by Trinity-Pawling (3-4, 2-4) on the Brunswick 25-yard line, the big-play Bruins struck again. On second down, quarterback Nick Winegardner rolled to the right and tossed a long pass to fellow senior Drake Miller down the right sideline. Miller caught the pass in stride for a 77-yard score. Chavez added the extra-point, giving the hosts a 14-0 lead with 2:07 left in the first half.

 

The Pride mounted a drive before the half expired, but the visitors turned the ball over on downs on the Bruins 23-yard line with 10 seconds before intermission.

 

Brunswick wasted little time after the break to tally its final touchdown. One play after receiving the second-half kickoff, Madison took a handoff on the Brunswick 32-yard line, broke an arm tackle and dashed across the grain for impressive 68-yard scoring scamper. Despite the missed extra-point, the Bruins took a 20-0 lead at 11:03 of the third quarter.

 

Trinity-Pawling answered with a touchdown, capping a six-play, 62-yard drive with a 47-yard touchdown pass. The Pride added the extra-point kick to cut the deficit to 20-7 with 9:07 left in the third quarter.

 

In the fourth quarter, the visitors mounted another drive into Brunswick territory. The Bruins’ defense again halted the drive, as senior Lucas Delgado made a jumping interception grab right at the Brunswick goal line with 6:07 remaining in the game.

 

Delgado’s interception was the second pick of the game by the Brunswick defense, as classmate Alex Clarke picked off a Trinity-Pawling pass early in the second quarter.

 

Following the Delgado interception, the Bruins offense took over on their own one-yard line. Madison gave Brunswick some vital field position with a 39-yard run on first down. The Bruins moved the ball into Trinity-Pawling territory, while working game clock down and forcing the visitors to use all three time-outs. Eventually, the Bruins turned the ball over on downs on the Trinity-Pawling 29-yard line with 1:21 left in the game.

 

The Pride moved the ball in the air in the waning seconds of the contest, but time ran out on the visitors, as Brunswick held on for the 20-7 win.
