Football Runs Over Taft

Brunswick picked up an Erickson League road win on Saturday, besting Taft 49-28. The victory boosts the Bruins overall record to 4-1, and 2-0 in league play. Brunswick’s offense totaled a season-best 424 total yards, including 306 yards on the ground against the Rhinos (3-2, 2-2).
 
Jalen Madison paced the Bruins’ rushing attack, totaling 268 yards on 26 carries with three touchdowns on the ground.
 
Madison scored the first touchdown of the game, breaking a pair of tackles en route to a 27-yard touchdown run with 6:28 remaining in the first quarter. Chris Chavez added the first of seven made extra-point kicks for the Bruins.
 
Taft responded quickly with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead at 5:11 in the first frame.
 
In the second quarter, Brunswick’s Rocco DiChiara hauled in a touchdown pass from quarterback Nicky Winegardner on a third-and-goal play from the Taft 21-yard line. Chavez connected on the extra-point, giving the Bruins a 14-8 lead  at the 10:08 mark.
 
Later in the second quarter, the Rhinos knotted the game at 14-14 with a 37-yard touchdown pass on fourth down. Taft was not successful on the extra-point kick, as the teams headed to the half tie at 14 apiece.
 
The Bruins opened the third quarter with a scoring drive, as Madison plunged in on a two-yard touchdown run. Following the extra-point, Brunswick led the game 21-14 with 8:52 remaining in the third quarter.
 
Brunswick made it a 28-14 contest at 4:24 in the third, as Winegardner tossed another touchdown pass, connecting with Bernard Zourgrana from 48 yards out.
 
Trailing by two-touchdowns, Taft went to the air on its next possession. After a sack by Brunswick’s Lyndon Gay on second down, the Rhinos attempted a third-down pass down the sideline that the Bruins’ Nolan Morris intercepted on the Taft 19-yard line. Morris returned the ball all the way for the score, giving the Bruins 35-14 lead with 2:53 left in the third quarter.
 
The hosts answered with a touchdown in the final seconds of the third quarter on a short run, cutting the Brunswick lead to 35-21.
 
The Bruins added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to gain extra breathing room. Madison broke through the line on an inside run on the ensuing Brunswick possession, as the running back raced 72 yards for the score. Keyvonne Wilder added the final score for the Bruins with a touchdown run from eight yards out, as the visitors built a 49-21 lead with 8:05 left in the game.

Taft added the final touchdown of the at 7:02 of the fourth quarter, as the Bruins left Watertown with the 49-28 road win.
