Soccer Tops Deerfield with Late Goal

Brunswick broke a 1-1 tie against Deerfield in the 82nd minute with a nifty go-ahead goal by Stevie Lopez, as the Bruins held on for the 2-1 neutral site victory.

Playing in the first-ever New England Prep Soccer Jamboree, hosted by the Farmington Sports Arena, Deerfield struck first with a goal in the 18th minute of action.

Brunswick (1-2-1) tied the contest seven minutes later, as Kyle Raker worked through the Deerfield defense and finished with a low shot from the penalty box area to tie the score at 1-1.

Both teams accumulated several scoring chances during the remainder of the first half, but the game remained tied at the intermission.

Late in the second half, Lopez netted the decisive goal in the 82nd minute of action. On the scoring play, Lopez received a pass from Ryan Chinai near the right corner flag. Lopez settled the ball, took a touch, and played a cross towards the box. Lopez’s perfectly placed kick sent the ball into the far corner of the goal, struck the right post, and dropped into the net for the 2-1 lead.

The Bruins’ defense held strong in the final minutes of play to preserve the team’s first win on the season. Brunswick goalie Eric Meindl made eight saves on the day, including a pair of challenging stops in the second half.

On the day, Deerfield held a 10-9 advantage on shots on goal, while owning a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Bruins return to action at home against Avon Old Farms on Wednesday, September 25.
