Tennis Wins First NEITA-NEPSAC Class A Crown

Brunswick won the 2019 NEITA-NEPSAC Class A Championship for the first time, beating Groton on the Zebras’ home courts, 4-1. The Bruins, historically a Class B powerhouse, moved into the Class A draw this season.

Fourth-year head coach Ryan Abraham reflected on the team’s first run at the Class A crown, as the Bruins won last season’s Class A title.

“At the beginning of the season I told the boys that I didn't care about a perfect record this year. We should expect to have ups and downs and have some things not go our way,” said Abraham. “We would learn how to adapt, and use every match as experience towards our one goal: winning New England's.”

The Bruins, the FAA regular season and FAA tourney champions, won an opening NEITA-NEPSAC Quarterfinal over Deerfield on Saturday, 4-1, to advance to the semifinals against Cheshire Academy. The Cats dealt Brunswick (15-2) one of the Bruins’ two regular-season setbacks earlier in the year.

In the semis later in the day on Saturday, the Bruins posted a 4-2 win over Cheshire Academy to advance to the title bout at Groton.

Both the quarterfinal and semifinals were hosted by Choate.

In the finals, the Bruins won the doubles point with a quick win at #2, as the tandem of Evan Lee and Ben Powis cruised to an 8-1 win. At #1, the Brunswick duo of Ryan Glanville and Aidan Reilly battled to 8-8, and won the tie-breaker, 7-4.

Moving on to singles, Groton tied the contest at 1-1, after a victory at #1 over Brunswick’s Ben Powis (6-0, 6-1).

The Bruins regained the lead at 2-1, following Ryan Glanville’s decisive 6-2, 6-0 win at #3 singles.

Later, Brunswick built a commanding 3-1 advantage, as Aidan Reilly posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at #4.

In the title-clinching match for the Bruins, Evan Lee picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at #2, giving Brunswick its first Class A title.
