Brunswick sent three boats to the historic Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, as the Freshman Eight entry posted a program best, second-place finish to lead the Bruin contingent at the largest scholastic regatta in the world.
Competing on a 1,500-meter course on the Schuylkill River, the Freshman Eight boat progressed through the 42-boat time trial and won its semifinal heat. Racing in the final, the Bruins finished just 0:01.84 seconds off the gold-medal pace from the local entry, St. Joseph’s Prep (4:36.33). St. Alban's (D.C.) took bronze, exactly one second behind the Bruins.
The Varsity Eight, racing in the Boys Senior Eight category, finished 11th out of 37 entries in the time trials to qualify for the 18-boat semifinals. Brunswick missed out on the Grand Final, the fastest event at the regatta, by less than one second.
The Bruins finished fourth in their six-boat semifinal to qualify for the Petite Final (places 7-12). In the Petite Final, the Bruins finished in 11th place, as St. Joseph’s Prep won the Grand Final.
Brunswick also brought a Junior Four boat to the regatta. The foursome finished 10th in their 62-boat time trial to qualify for the semifinals. In the six-boat semifinal heat, the Bruins finished fourth, missing a spot in the Final by two places.
Brunswick will be sending three eights to the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) Championships on Saturday, May 25, held at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
