Brunswick dropped a 2-1 decision to Hamden Hall in an FAA Semifinal on Wednesday at Hamden. The third-seeded Bruins finish their season with a 12-6 record, as the second-seeded Hornets advance to play Hopkins, the top-seed, for the FAA title on Friday, May 17.
Brunswick scored its lone run in the second inning. Jake Hyde reached first base following a dropped third strike. A sacrifice bunt by Jack Griffin combined with fielding error allowed Hyde to reach third base. With one out, Danny Lauter stepped to the dish and smacked a first-pitch single to right field, driving in Hyde for the 1-0 lead.
The Hornets tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Following a walk and a stolen base, a Hamden Hall single to left field drove home the runner on second to tie the contest at 1-1.
In the next inning, the Hornets scored the go-ahead run with two-outs. After a single, Hamden Hall took a 2-1 lead with a run-scoring triple to right field.
Brunswick had a chance to tie the game in the sixth inning, as two different players reached second base in the inning. Aidan Redahan led-off with a double to on a 1-2 pitch. However, Redahan was thrown out trying to steal third base during Luke Fisher’s at-bat. With one out, Fisher reached base on a single to left. Later in the inning, with two away, Griffin hit a single to centerfield, pushing Fisher to second base. Brunswick ended up stranding both runners, as Hamden Hall retired the next batter to kept its one-run lead intact.
The Bruins went down in order in the seventh and final inning, as the Hornets prevailed, 2-1.
Brunswick starting pitcher Leo Socci (3-1) took the loss. Socci went six innings, allowing two earned runs, and struck out seven batters to up his season K total to a team-best 45 punch-outs.
Redahan finished with a single and a double on the day, as Griffin added a single. Both Redahan and Griffin finish the season tied for the team lead in singles (18), while the duo along with Socci tied for the team lead in hits (23).
Rounding out the seven Brunswick hits on the day were Fisher’s two singles and solo base knocks by Lauter and Marc McGuire.
