Lacrosse Picks Up One-Goal Road Win

Leading 8-1, Brunswick fought off a second half rally by Avon Old Farms for a one-goal road win on Wednesday at Avon, 9-8. The league win bumps the Bruins, ranked seventh nationally, to 12-1 overall and 8-0 in NEW-1 play, as The Winged Beavers fall to 10-2 and 7-1 in league play.
 
Up next for Brunswick is a showdown against second-ranked Salisbury on Friday, May 10, at 7:00 p.m. on Cosby Field.
 
After a 1-1 first quarter, the Bruins erupted for seven unanswered goals in the second quarter. Cooper Moore netted two goals during the run, while Coulter Mackesy set-up three scores and Michael Gottlieb added a goal and an assist.
 
Trailing 8-1 in the third quarter, Avon Old Farms clawed back into the game with four-straight tallies.
 
In an 8-5 contest in the fourth frame, the Winged Beavers netted two more goals to make it an 8-7 game. Late in the fourth quarter, Moore gave the Bruins some breathing room with a man-up tally.
 
Avon Old Farms responded with a goal with under a minute remaining, setting the score at 9-8.
 
The Winged Beavers lost the ensuing face-off on a violation. After getting possession, the Bruins held on to the ball through the remaining seconds of action to secure the one-goal win.
