Trailing 2-1 to Rye CDS in the sixth inning, Brunswick plated four runs during a two-out rally, as the Bruins picked up a key FAA road win on Saturday, 5-2. With the win, the Bruins improve to 10-3 overall and 8-2 in league action.
The Bruins currently sit in second place in the FAA, one game behind Hopkins (9-1) heading into the final two conference games. The two teams will meet at Brunswick on Tuesday, May 7, as each team wraps-up the league slate the following day. The top two teams will receive a bye to the semifinals of the single-elimination FAA Tournament the following week.
In the decisive sixth, the two-out rally started with a four-pitch walk to Billy Carangelo. Reed Mascolo then stepped to the plate an launched a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer. The home run was the first of Mascolo’s Brunswick career, as the Bruins took a 3-2 lead.
Cole Mascolo followed with an infield single, as the next batter, Aidan Redahan, was hit by a pitch. With two runners on base, Leo Socci smacked a two-run triple to right for a 5-2 advantage.
Brunswick starting pitcher, Reed Mascolo allowed a pair of runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but the hurler got out of the jam with a strikeout. Jake Hyde successfully relieved Mascolo in the seventh to close-out the game.
Mascolo (4-0) whiffed five batters over six innings for the win, as Hyde earned his first save of the season, picking up a pair of K’s in one inning of action.
Eight Bruins combined for a dozen hits, including Reed Macolo’s two-run homer and Socci’s two-run triple. Jack Griffin added three singles, as Redahan and Cole Mascolo each chipped in with a pair of singles.
The Bruins host Poly Prep in a non-league game on Monday, May 6.
