Late Rally Propels Baseball to Victory

Trailing 1-0 to Hamden Hall, Brunswick rallied in the later innings to post a 5-1 league win over the Hornets on Tuesday. The victory sets Brunswick’s record at 8-2 overall and 6-2 in FAA play.

Hamden Hall (7-5, 7-2) scratched its lone run across the plate in the top of the third inning off Brunswick starting pitcher Jake Hyde.

Trailing 1-0, the Bruins struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cole Mascolo drove in the first run on a bases-load walk with no outs. Following a fly-out, throw-out double-play, Leo Socci drove in two runs on a two-out single to centerfield to give the hosts a 3-1 lead.

Brunswick added to its lead in the sixth with two more runs. Following a one-out double by Jack Griffin, Danny Lauter drove Griffin in with a two-bagger to deep centerfield. Later, Jack Mathews hit an RBI single that plated Lauter from third base, as the Bruins built a 5-1 lead.

Hyde (2-0) scattered six hits and struck-out five batters over five innings for the win, as Reed Mascolo finished the game with two scoreless innings of relief action for his second save of the year.

Mathews led the Bruins from the plate with a 3-for-3 day and an RBI, as Griffin and Lauter (one RBI) each had a double. Socci added a two-run single, while Hyde chipped in with a single.

Brunswick returns to action with a non-league home game against Salisbury on Thursday, May 2.
