Brunswick finished first in an abbreviated Connecticut State Championship Regatta, held at Captain’s Cove Seaport, in Bridgeport on Saturday. Significant high winds limited all the teams to just four total races, as the Bruins posted a near-perfect, five-point result with three race wins and one second-place finish in FJ boats.
In the A Division, Will Michels skippered with Will George crewing. The tandem won both races against 12 other boats, scoring the minimum of two points. In the second race, the Bruins benefitted from a significant puff of wind that allowed their boat to overtake a nearly capsized Fairfield Prep boat near the finish line for the win.
Brunswick’s Leyton Borcherding skippered the B Division entry with George Coyle crewing. After a win in the first race, the Bruins and the Choate entry sailed around numerous capsized boats, as Brunswick finished second to the Wild Boars in the second race.
Overall the Bruins posted five points, as Choate finished second overall with nine points and Greenwich Academy was third with 13 points.
The Bruins, unbeaten at 19-0 in team racing, return to regular-season action on Wednesday, May 1.
