Hopkins broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run fourth inning and held on for the 5-3 win over the Bruins on Wednesday in New Haven. The FAA setback drops Brunswick to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in league play.
The Bruins opened the game with a three-run first inning, as Leo Socci and Marc McGuire had RBI singles, while Luke Fisher added an RBI on a sacrifice fly. The Bruins collected four of their five hits on the day in the opening frame, including Aidan Redahan’s lead-off double.
Brunswick missed a chance to add to its lead in the second inning after a pair of two-out errors allowed runners to reach second and third base, but the Bruins could not capitalize, as a ground-out ended the threat.
Hopkins cut the lead to 3-2 in the home half of the second on a two-run homer off Brunswick starting pitcher Reed Mascolo. Later in the frame, the Hilltoppers tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single that drove in a runner from second base with one out.
The hosts added two runs in the decisive fourth inning with a pair of RBI singles to take a 5-3 lead.
After being put down in order in the fifth and sixth innings, the Bruins got the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning on a lead-off single by Danny Lauter. However, three consecutive fly-outs stranded Lauter at first, as Hopkins held on to win, 5-3.
Reed Mascolo (1-2) went four innings on the hill, allowing five runs, four earned, while striking-out out two batters and issuing four walks. Cole Mascolo tossed the final two innings in relief, posting a strike-out while walking one.
Socci, McGuire, Lauter and Jake Hyde has singles for Brunswick, as Redahan’s double was the lone extra-base hit for the Bruins.
