#4 Lacrosse Falls to #6 Hill Academy in Overtime

In overtime, Hill Academy netted the game-winning goal on a man-up tally at the 2:40 mark, as the Pride picked up a 12-11 victory over Brunswick on Cosby Field on Wednesday. The Bruins, ranked fourth in the latest Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse poll dropped their first game of the year (9-1) with the extra-session setback to the sixth-ranked Hill Academy squad.

In the four-minute overtime, the Bruins won the face-off and called a time-out to set an offensive play. However, Brunswick turned the ball over and committed a 30-second technical foul, giving the sixth-ranked Pride possession, as the Bruins needed to defend their goal with one less player in OT. At the 2:40 mark, Hill (9-1) ended the game with the sudden-victory tally from the low slot.

The overtime loss overshadowed a remarkable, five-goal, fourth-quarter comeback by the Bruins that forced the bonus stanza.

Trailing 10-5 in the fourth frame, the Bruins netted three-straight, man-up goals against Hill’s reserve goalie as the Pride’s starter served a two-minute, non-releasable penalty.

Coulter Mackesy netted a six-on-four tally at 8:11, shrugging off defenders on the way to his team-leading 17th goal.

Following a face-off win, Mackesy fed Michael Gottlieb for a man-up tall at 7:22. Thirty-two seconds later, the Bruins made it a 10-8 game on AJ Delgado’s fourth marker of the contest.

Hill answered with a tally to build a three-goal advantage with an even-strength marker at 3:44.

Brunswick’s Liam Fairback mounted a comeback with back-to-back tallies 17 seconds apart. Fairback’s second goal, a righty laser from 12 yards out, made it an 11-10 contest with 3:05 remaining.

The Bruins forced overtime with a clever deke and drive to the crease by Cooper Moore. On the play, Moore slipped past an approaching defender and netted the game-tying shot with a doorstep bounce-shot at 2:44.

The home loss snapped a streak of 25-straight wins on Cosby Field that dated back to April 16, 2016, as the Bruins lost to New Canaan High School, 13-8.

Brunswick returns to action against another Canadian team, Everest Academy, at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., on Friday, April 26.
