Trailing in early matches to St. Luke’s, Brunswick rallied to win 5-2 on Wednesday on the Richman Tennis Courts. A number of Bruins moved up the ladder in both singles and doubles to pick up the team win for the Bruins (4-0).
Starting the day with the four singles and #3 doubles on the court, the Bruins dropped the first set in #1, #2 and #4 singles, while #3 doubles trailed 4-1 in the first set.
The #3 doubles tandem of Nick Errico and Joe Delany turned the tide in the opening set, winning the tie-break, 7-0. The tandem was first to finish, winning the second set (6-0) for the first team point for the Bruins.
Lorenzo Gunningham, playing up at #3 singles, picked up a straight-set win (6-2, 6-0), giving Brunswick a 2-0 overall lead.
St. Luke’s trimmed the Bruins’ lead to 2-1 following a win at #2 singles over Evan Lee (6-2, 6-3).
Brunswick’s Edward Nagler, also playing up at #4, won the second set to force a super-tiebreaker. Nagler trailed 5-2 in the deciding set, but rallied to win eight of the next nine points for a memorable win, 10-6.
Trailing 3-1, St. Luke’s #1 player picked up a win over Ben Powis (7-5, 6-4), as the remaining two doubles matches started.
While Brunswick led 3-2, the result of the overall match against St. Luke’s would be decided by the two remaining doubles contests.
Building more tension, each match advanced to a first-set tiebreaker. At #1, the Brunswick tandem of Matthew Russell and Alex Penn won the tiebreaker (5), while Brunswick’s duo at #2 (Colin Wahl/Peter Lehrman) also took the tie-breaker (6), as Wahl won the set with a service ace.
Russell and Penn closed out their match at #1 doubles with a 6-3 win, clinching the overall contest, 4-2.
Wahl and Lehrman went to another tiebreak in the second set at #2. Wahl followed the script from the first tiebreaker, winning on a big serve to clinch the match, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6).
