In a battle of 3-0 teams, Brunswick prevailed over Avon Old Farms by a 3-1 margin on Wednesday. The non-league, home win boosts the Bruins to 4-0.
After each team plated a run in the first inning, neither team would score until Brunswick’s Jake Hyde drove in a pair of runs in the fifth with a two-out, bases-loaded single.
Hyde, the starting pitcher for the Bruins, worked out of his own bases-loaded jam with no outs in the third inning. Hyde posted a pair of strikeouts before enticing an infield ground-out to end the threat.
In the deciding fifth inning, the Bruins loaded the bases on singles by Jack Griffin and Leo Socci, as Aidan Redahan reached base earlier on a fielder’s choice. Hyde laced a 0-2 pitch to right field for a single, driving in Griffin and Socci for the 3-1 lead.
The Winged Beavers threatened in the top of the sixth with a pair of two-out singles, but a fly-ball put out halt the comeback bid.
Reed Mascolo relieved Hyde in the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 frame to seal the win.
Hyde (1-0) went six innings, striking out three and allowed one earned run, as Mascolo (S1) earned the save with an inning of scoreless relief work with a pair of punch-outs.
Jack Griffin led the Bruins with three singles and a run scored, as Hyde added two singles and a pair of RBI. Jack Mathews, Socci, Redahan and Cole Mascolo accounted for the other four Brunswick base hits.
