Baseball Wins Rain-Shortened Game

Brunswick broke a sixth inning tie against King with four runs, as the game was called due to rain with the Bruins leading 7-4. The six-inning win boosts Brunswick’s overall record to 3-0 and 2-0 in FAA action.

The Bruins scored two runs in the home half of the first inning. Aidan Redahan smacked his first home run of his career to give Brunswick a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jake Hyde singled with two outs and Jack Mathews followed with a double that drove in Hyde.

As the game moved along, a slight sprinkle of precipitation slowly grew to a steady shower by the fifth inning.

In the top of the fifth, King tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run, two-out home run to center field.

After a rain delay with one out in the bottom of the fifth, Brunswick regained the lead on a fielding error on a ball hit by Luke Fisher with two outs. On the play, Leo Socci, who led off the inning with a double, scored from second.

As the rain continued to fall in the sixth inning, King quickly loaded the bases with a walk, a hit batter and an error against reliever Cole Mascolo, who stepped in for Socci who started the game for the Bruins. A sacrifice fly to center scored one run, but Mascolo got out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly-out.

Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins put runners on first and second with one out. Following a fly-out, Socci drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single to center. After Hyde was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Mathews wiped the bases clean with a three-run triple to right field to give the Bruins a 7-3 lead. Following the final put-out of the inning, the game was called by the umpires due to the continuing rainfall.

Mascolo (1-0) got the win in one inning of relief, as Socci tossed five innings and collected three strikeouts and two earned runs.

Socci, Redahan and Mathews each went 2-for-4, as Mathews had a double and a triple to go with five RBI. Redahan smashed a homer, while Socci added double, as each player collected an RBI and scored two runs. Reed Mascolo added the other extra-base hit, a double, for Brunswick.
