Tennis Tops Hotchkiss in Thriller

In a 3-3 contest against Hotchkiss, Brunswick’s Lorenzo Gunningham posted a memorable, three-set win at #5 singles to beat the Bearcats by a 4-3 margin on the Richman Courts on Wednesday. The victory bumps the Bruins’ record to 2-0 on the season, as Hotchkiss falls to 1-1.

 

Brunswick won the doubles point, taking an 8-0 win at #1 and securing an 8-4 victory at #2.

 

In singles action, Hotchkiss tied the overall match at 1-1 with a win at #2.

 

The teams twice alternated wins in singles play, setting the overall match score at 3-3. Brunswick’s Evan Lee picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at #3, as Hotchkiss won at #6, tying the contest at 2-2. Aiden Reilly won his match at #4 (6-4, 6-3) the Bruins a 3-2 lead, but the Bearcats knotted the match at 3-3 with a win at #1.

 

In the 3-3 contest, the final point would be decided in front of a growing crowd at #5 singles.

 

Gunningham dropped the first set, 6-4, but evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second set to force a match-deciding third set.

 

In the final frame, Gunningham jumped out to a 5-1 lead, earning a pair of service breaks. His Hotchkiss opponent battled back, winning three-straight games to close the gap to 5-4. However, Gunningham halted the comeback bid, holding serve to win the final set (6-4) as well as clinching the team win.
