Lacrosse Knocks Off Another Ranked Team

Brunswick, ranked 11th in the latest Inside Lacrosse/Under Armour national poll, topped #21 Deerfield by an 11-5 margin on Saturday on Cosby Field. The win is the second-straight over a nationally-ranked opponent, as the Bruins knocked off thirteenth-ranked Boys’ Latin 10-2 on Tuesday.

Saturday’s game against Deerfield was also the opening New England West 1 (NEW1) contest for both schools, as Brunswick improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in NEW1 action.

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead after one quarter of action, as AJ Delgado opened the scoring with a man-up tally at 9:27. Coulter Mackesy’s goal made it a 2-0 game with just over two minutes left in the frame.

Deerfield (0-2, 0-1) tied the game in the second quarter with back-to-back tallies, including a man-up goal in the opening minute of the quarter.

Brunswick countered with a four-goal run to close out the half. Brody Firestein gave the Bruins the lead for good with a bounce-shot marker at 6:58. Luke Waters boosted the Brunswick advantage to 4-2 with a tough-angle goal at 3:35. Less than a minute later, Cooper Moore notched a bounce-shot goal, as Waters capped the scoring with another tally at 2:03. The four-goal spurt gave the Bruins a 6-2 lead heading into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, Deerfield responded with another two-goal burst, cutting the Brunswick lead to 6-4 with 7:29 left.

Later in the third quarter, the Bruins earned some breathing room with a two-goal response. Mackesy make it a 7-4 game with a nifty doorstep dodge and bounce-shot goal at the 3:59 mark. Just 57 seconds later, Michael Mauricio netted point-blank shot off a feed from Moore to give the hosts an 8-4 advantage.

Deerfield added an in-close, man-up tally with 95 seconds remaining in the third quarter, setting the score at 8-5 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bruins used a three-goal run in the final frame to halt any potential Deerfield comeback. Liam Fairback bookended goals around a Ronda tally to complete the scoring, as Brunswick won 11-5.
