Swim Team Earns Silver at New Englands
Brunswick posted a program-best, second place finish at the 2019 NEPSAC Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, held at Deerfield over the weekend. The Bruins, in just their seventh season as a varsity sport, topped eight other well-established programs, as Andover won the title for the fourth-straight year.
Brunswick picked up a big win in the 200-freestyle relay, making the Bruins back-to-back New England Champions in the event. The quartet of Alex Hazlett, Keegan Drew, Christian Farricker, and Marcus Hodgson won the crown with a swim of 1:23.85 in the finals. The winning time is over one-second quicker than the cut-off for All-American designation. Drew, Farricker, and Hodgson were three of the four swimmers for Brunswick in last year’s championship swim.
In the opening race on Sunday, the 200-medley relay team (Cole Pierce, Jack Sparks, Hazlett, and Gavin Molloy) finished fourth.
Brunswick posted a second-place finish in the last race of the day, the 400-free relay. In the exciting finale, the Bruins (Farricker, Pierce, Drew, and Hodgson) went back-and-forth against the eventual winners from Andover, trailing by just 0.51 at the finish.
In the eight individual events, 14 Brunswick swimmers collected valuable team points, as nine different Bruins posted a pair of top-eight results or better. In a show of team depth, three Brunswick swimmers scored points in seven of the eight individual finals.
Farricker, with a relay win in the 200-freestyle and a second-place finish in the 400-freestyle, added a pair of second-place swims in the individuals. Farricker posted an All-American level time of 48.93 in the 100-fly and was just one-hundredth of a second off the winning pace in the 100-backstroke (50.74).
In the 200-free, Drew finished third (1:41.04), as Nico Apostolides was sixth and Lucas Hodgson followed in seventh.
Cole Pierce led the Bruins with a fourth-place result in the 200-IM (1:52.76), while Max Meissner touched in sixth place and Jack Moore was two places behind Meissner in eighth.
Hodgson picked up a bronze in the 50-free (21.29), as Hazlett was sixth and Gavin Molloy was 12th.
Moore followed Farricker’s silver in the 100-fly with an eighth-place finish in the race, while Jake Charney was 14th.
In the 100-free, Hodgson posted a fourth-place result (46.29), as Drew was two spots behind Hodgson in sixth and Michael O’Malley finished 13th.
The Bruins finished 4-6-7 in the 500-free, as Apostolides was fourth (4:43.05), as Meissner and Lucas Hodgson followed in sixth and seventh, respectively.
In the 100-backstroke, Pierce was fourth, just one-tenth of a second behind Farricker’s silver finish, while Alex Morgan took 11th.
Hazlett finished sixth in the penultimate race of the day, the 100-breast, as Jack Sparks touched the wall in 11th position.
