Squash Wins Fourth National Title

Brunswick won its fourth national title and the Justi Cup on Sunday at Trinity College, as the top-seeded Bruins dispatched second-ranked Haverford in the 2019 HEAD U.S. High School Division I Team Championships by a 6-1 score.

It was the fourth-straight time the Bruins faced Haverford in the finals of the top bracket, as Brunswick won titles in 2016 and 2018, while the Fords took the top prize in 2017. The Bruins won their first championship in 2015.

After winning the title on Sunday, legendary Brunswick head coach Jim Stephens said, “The team played with grit, determination and courage. I am so proud of all our players.”

In the finals, Brunswick’s Tad Carney gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead with a three-game sweep at #7. Brian Leonard made it a 2-0 contest with a sweep at #2, while Coulter Mackesy won a four-game match at #5.

Leading 3-0 in the best of seven matches, Dana Santry clinched the title with a victory in a hard-fought, five-game match at #3.

After the sealing the title, Brunswick’s Mac Aube won at #6 and Nick Spizzirri battled to win at #1, while Pierce Henderson fell at #7 for the 6-1 final.

Earlier in the day in the seventh-place match of the D-1 bracket, Brunswick ‘B’ team beat Belmont Hill, 4-3.
