Aaron Golub ⎯ professional speaker, entrepreneur, consultant, and the first legally blind Division I athlete to play in a game, when he played football at Tulane University ⎯ visited Brunswick’s Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools on Thursday to speak with students and faculty about his inspiring journey.
Golub began playing football in seventh grade and struggled to have an impact on the field due to his disability, hitting rock bottom as a third-stringer on his high school’s junior varsity team as a sophomore.
But through his grit, determination, and effort ⎯ showing up at the field at 6 a.m. every morning before school and changing his position to long snapper ⎯ he ultimately became a senior captain and starter at Tulane.
“I am a strong believer that things don’t happen to you, they happen for you,” Golub said, telling Brunswick students of all ages that goals are achievable no matter what obstacles you face or what others say about your chances.
“Each of us has challenges, and they aren’t easier or harder than mine ⎯ they are just different and unique to you,” he said.
“When you are truly willing to find that goal and go after that vision relentlessly, you can achieve anything you want.”
Before taking questions from the audience, Golub expressed his gratitude and perspective while reflecting on adversity and his life’s journey.
“I am so thankful and so grateful that I was born legally blind ⎯ it has allowed me to do incredible things, meet amazing people, and build the life and business I have today,” he said.
“If you take that perspective of gratitude about the challenges you are facing ⎯ when you can shift your perspective ⎯ then the impossible becomes possible.”
