Math Teams Shine at Brown University

Brunswick’s Upper School math students delivered an impressive performance this weekend at the Brown University Math Olympiad (BrUMO), posting one of the strongest results in program history against a highly competitive field.

In its second year, BrUMO introduced a combined A- and B-division format for the first time. The A-division featured extremely challenging problems and drew 52 teams and roughly 250 students from top high schools across the Northeast, along with several competitive international ad hoc teams. The B-division included demanding but more accessible questions.

Brunswick’s A-team rose to the occasion in the most rigorous part of the competition. Senior Jack Whitney-Epstein finished fourth overall, sophomore Sohan Javeri placed sixth, and the team earned fourth place in the overall standings.

“I had no expectation of a high ranking for our top squad,” said coach and math instructor Michael Allwood. “But the boys delivered some outstanding results.”

The B-team also performed well in their division, winning the team round and seeing junior Magne Sogaard-Srikrishnan place first among individual competitors.
