First Day: Courage, Honor, Truth ‘Make Our School Community’

On a clear, blue September morning, after members of the Class of 2026 processed hand-in-hand with first graders into Dann Gymnasium on Edwards Campus — a longtime First Day tradition — Head of School Thomas W. Philip opened Brunswick’s 123rd academic year by addressing the faculty and student body.

Philip began by welcoming all new boys and faculty — and by reminding each Lower, Middle, and Upper Schooler how fortunate he is to be a student at Brunswick.

He also noted the exceptional academic, athletic, and artistic talents of the student body; the dedication, expertise, and care of the faculty; and Brunswick’s state-of-the-art facilities and resources.

But most significantly, Philip highlighted the unique and important characteristics that have defined Brunswick during the full course of its 123-year history — ultimately citing the school’s motto of Courage, Honor, Truth to reinforce his central message.

  • Having the courage to be true to yourself; to move on after disappointment or setback; to make new friends and respect others; to try new things and to do the right thing
  • Having the honor to be respectful; to value your reputation and the reputation of your school; to keep your promises and commitments; to be grateful for all of your good fortune
  • Telling the truth in all things, big and small, especially if you’re tempted not to tell the truth because you’re worried you might have made a mistake

“The closer we live by these guidelines, the better we will each be individually and collectively as a school,” Philp said as way of conclusion, before declaring the 2025–2026 academic year officially open.

“Make the most of what you’ve been given and make the most of where you go to school — let’s be all we can this year for ourselves, for our classmates, and for Brunswick School.”
