Brunswick's final match of the season was the NEPSAC Championship game against Phillips Exeter Academy at Mehra Natatorium on Sunday, with the Bruins ultimately earning a 20-13 win to capture their 10th consecutive New England Championship title.
Exeter, a historic water polo program with numerous NEPSAC Championship titles themselves, came out ready to challenge the Bruins. From the start, Exeter showcased its speed and physical play, putting the Bruins on their heels. It was clear that Exeter was looking to capitalize on an early opportunity, and they did just that. However, the Bruins soon warmed up, matching Exeter’s physicality and showcasing their own talent. Both teams exchanged goals throughout the first quarter, but Exeter managed to net one more before the quarter buzzer, taking a 5-4 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw a different story. With a change in the lineup and the Bruins finding their rhythm, Brunswick surged ahead, taking a four-goal lead over Exeter to end the first half at 11-6. While Brunswick was clearly heating up, Exeter refused to back down in the third quarter. Both teams scored four goals each, making the score 15-10 in favor of the Bruins with one quarter to go.
A few more substitutions were made, and the younger Bruins lineup entered the pool with intensity. Brunswick added five more goals to Exeter’s three in the final period. The seniors entered the pool one last time before the final buzzer. Brunswick swam away with a 20-13 victory, earning their 10th consecutive New England Championship title.
Special congratulations to Ben Atkinson, Adam Blum, Preston Elms, Finn Rosenbaum, Jack Scafidi, Emil Sogaard, and James Walker for four years of dedication to the team. The program would not be the same without their leadership, and they will be missed next year.
With that, the 2024 Brunswick varsity water polo season officially comes to a close. Thank you to all the parents, fans, and supporters who have been with us throughout this remarkable season.
