A New Era: House & Den Program Unites Middle Schoolers

Clues were given. Hints were sprinkled into announcements. But even so, the “Big Reveal” remained a big mystery up until a very special assembly for Middle Schoolers in late September.

The assembly served as the announcement for a new House and Den Program for Brunswick Middle School students, whose division was split this year as grades five and six were recast into the Lower Middle School in the former Pre School on Edwards Campus. The move gave room for grades seven and eight to spread out in their existing space across the street.

Introduced to students by sixth grade advisor Kyle Miller, the program was created to maintain and ultimately enhance the inter-grade connections in the Middle School, unifying the groups in the two buildings.

“I would like to usher in a new era!” Miller told the boys enthusiastically. “An era where a fifth grader can break bread with an eighth grader, where sixth graders can feel as brothers to seventh graders, and where one ‘evil king’ divides us!”

“I will name that king by name,” he said. “King Street!”

After gathering in the Lower Middle School Assembly Space, boys were invited to solve a three-step riddle and hunt down the location of their new “House” — whether it be Grizzly, Polar, Sun, or Kodiak.

Once at home in their new Houses, students received new House hats and learned which Den they belong to — and the work of building connections began in earnest.

“By creating cross-grade groupings of boys and carving out times for them to be together, we will work to maintain and strengthen connections,” said Head of Middle School Rob Follansbee.

“In fact, it is quite likely that by virtue of its intentionality, this new program will foster even greater and more positive interactions between age groups.”
