Lower School Courses

Welcome to Brunswick School’s Summer Session for Lower School students! Offerings for boys entering grades 1-4 will run from June 12-June 23 for Session I. Preparatory and enrichment classes are available in Math, Reading, Writing, Science, Computer Science, Technology, Shop, and the Arts. Please see each course description for additional details, timing, and dates. Registration is open to the public, and as class sizes are limited, enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

For students also enrolling in one of the Brunswick Sports Camps offerings in the afternoon, lunch will be provided.

Course Offerings

ORIENTATION – Bridge Camp

Description: Does your son have First Grade jitters, or can he hardly wait to join the big boys at the Lower School? If so, this is the camp for you. BRIDGE Summer Camp will allow your son the opportunity to get a taste of the Specials he will be a part of in First Grade, including art, music, library, and of course gym. Students will also have a chance to participate in learning activities. In addition, the boys will enjoy getting familiar with our amazing Lower School playground. Your son will experience all the Lower School has to offer as he crosses over the BRIDGE into First Grade.
 
 

ARTS – Arts and Crafts

ARTS – Theater Camp

Description: Does your son long to be in the spotlight? Does he love to sing and act? If so, Theater Camp is the place for him. This summer we will immerse the boys in all aspects of putting on a musical production. From behind-the-scenes lighting and set design to costumes and choreography, Theatre Camp promises to be a fun and entertaining ride for all. Improvisation games and activities will tap into each boy’s natural humor, creativity, and joy. Every student will have a part to play in a musical show that will culminate in a performance for friends and family on the last day of camp. Boys will create and produce their own “Playbills,” write their own actor bios, and welcome their audience. Move over Broadway, King Street is where the “acting” is!
 
 

ARTS/SCIENCE – Harry Potter Camp

Description: Muggle schools may not be in session but Hogwarts Greenwich is! Are you ready to be sorted? Our wizards will explore potion making, spells and dueling, Quibbler journalism, storytelling, crafting and of course, quidditch! We will work with our house and collaborate with other houses as we search for horcruxes and compete in a Triwizard tournament. If you took this camp last summer you will be excited to know that we will have all NEW adventures (mixed with some of our favorites from last year).
 
 

COMPUTER SCIENCE – Math and Coding in the Digital Age with Poonam Gupta

Description: This unique course will teach the mathematics and problem-solving skills required for Computer Science. CULINARY ARTS – Baking at Wick

Description: Learn how to decorate cakes and make fondant in Chef Patrick's new class! This cake decorating class will center around working with fondant, chocolate, buttercream, and a variety of sugar related cake decorations. This class will teach students how to make beautiful, creative cake decorations that look amazing and taste delicious. By the end of the class, students will even be able to mold fondant into animal figurines!
 
 

CULINARY ARTS – Cooking at Wick

Description: Would you like to learn how to cook this summer? Join Chef Patrick, Class of 1993 Culinary Institute of America Graduate, in Chef Patrick's Cooking demonstration class! You will learn how to cook multiple tasty dishes which are easy to make at home. The class stresses important life skills everyone should have, such as time management, mental preparation and teamwork. Learn how to make some of your favorite foods such as homemade pasta, eggs 4 ways, sushi and even dabble in the art of baking. This class will not only teach you how to make some amazing dishes, but also how to succeed with life lessons learned in the kitchen.
 
 

MATH – Be a Math Detective

Description: In this summer course, students will practice their math skills through fun and interactive activities. There are top-secret missions and we need several math detectives to solve each case! By completing math mysteries that focus on concepts taught throughout the school year, math detectives will unlock new clues. In the end, the detectives must collaborate in small groups and share their clues in order to solve the case!

Description: Through this session students will be practicing and enhancing their reading and writing skills by exploring various authors. The students will look at comparing and contrasting themes, analyzing text, analyzing illustrations, looking at the author's life, and will work on making connections. With each author that the students investigate, they will get to practice different skills through various activities. Through these multisensory activities such as writing their own story using the same theme or template that the author did or making illustrations using the same materials that the author and illustrator did, the students will add to their English Language Arts knowledge.

Students will have daily practice with drills for automaticity, spelling dictations, syllable types, syllable division, and fluency. Additionally, there will be an emphasis on knowledge of roots and their meanings for building vocabulary.
 
 

SCIENCE – Summer Shop Camp

Description: Join Mr. Coupe for ten fun-filled days of child directed building activities. Working with hand and power tools, students will learn about safety while designing and creating their own projects. Students use materials including wood, cardboard, paper, wire, paint, and leather in completing their projects. Previous projects have included gym scooters, ceremonial shields, picture frames, skateboards, signs, birdhouses, and habitats for pets. Boys will also have an opportunity to build and experiment with blocks and electric circuits. Your son’s imagination is the only limitation!

We’ll learn about constellations and galaxies, create our own telescopes, follow NASA and SpaceX, learn about blackholes and UFOs and the latest about missions to the moon and Mars. We’ll even build and launch our own rockets. We’ll look back on big events and look forward to future developments. We’ll have discussions, but also do lots of hands-on activities. Content will be targeted in an age-appropriate way to each group of students.

Grade (Rising): 1-5 Teachers: Tierney Minion
Course Size: 12 Cost: $525
Description: Each day we will begin with a story or video that introduces our specific daily challenge. The boys will be given certain parameters and instructions for their build. After the challenge is presented, the boys will have time to sketch out their ideas and start to create. The instructions along with the parameters will be posted on the board as they work. There will be some classes where boys will also be challenged to build with a partner or small team. The class will end each day with a showcase. Each boy will get the chance to show what they built and in some instances to test if their build structure holds up and stays standing. With each showcase there will be a chance to earn points for creativity, following directions, and problem solving. At the end of the session, someone will be named the Lego Master based off of the total points earned. This course will allow boys to creatively express themselves through working on different challenges.
 
 

WRITING – Basic Writing Skills

Description: Spend two weeks learning the skills of how to write a great paragraph, including strong topic and concluding sentences, adding details, transition words, exciting verbs, hooks, and revising and editing the final piece - helping students understand that organizing, clarifying ideas, and improving grammar and presentation are essential to strong writing.
 
 

WRITING – Crazy for Comics

Description: Calling all comic book fanatics! In this course students will explore the world of comics and graphic novels. Each student will use sequential art to create their own story. Students will take their story through the writing process, focusing on each writing stage. If you are a creative thinker with a zest for writing, come join us!
