Football - Varsity
Overview
The Brunswick School football program has a storied tradition of excellence dating back to 1902. Competing in the highly competitive Class “A” New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC), Brunswick plays a rigorous nine-game schedule each season.
Since 2018, Brunswick has achieved an impressive record of 38-12 (.76), with four bowl game appearances and two bowl game victories. The most recent triumph came in 2022, when the Bruins defeated Choate Rosemary Hall to win their first-ever Top Bowl (Class-A) New England Championship in school history.
Since 1989, Brunswick football has appeared in 15 NEPSAC Bowl games, securing victories in 10 of those championship games. The program boasts NEPSAC Championships in 2022, 2019, 2015, 2014, 2005, 2004, 2003, 1998, 1992, and 1989.
Head Coach Wayne McGillicuddy has been an integral part of Brunswick football since the fall of 2020 and was appointed head coach in 2022. Coach McGillicuddy brings a diverse background of coaching experience at both the college and prep school levels. Prior to joining Brunswick, he held coaching positions at Florida Atlantic University (D1 - FBS), Westfield State University (D3 - MASCAC), Wesleyan University (D3 - NESCAC), and St. Thomas More School (NEPSAC).
The program’s philosophy ensures that every 10th through 12th grader is a part of the varsity program, with all players dressing and traveling for every varsity game. The number of reps and plays each player receives in varsity games will determine his participation in that week's JV game. Coach McGillicuddy believes it is crucial for the program to stay together, allowing the boys to be developed by varsity coaches while immersing themselves in Brunswick football traditions, culture, and brotherhood.
Coach McGillicuddy collaborates closely with Brunswick’s college counseling office to ensure student-athletes pursue higher education and athletic opportunities at top colleges and universities. Over the past eight years, 56 Brunswick football players have continued their careers at the collegiate level, including six at FBS Division 1, 23 at FCS Division 1, three at Division 2, and 24 at Division 3 schools.
Brunswick varsity football players practice and play home games on Cosby Field, located adjacent to the training facility inside Burke Field House on Edwards Campus on King Street in Greenwich, Conn. For inquiries about the program, please contact Head Coach Wayne McGillicuddy.
