Brunswick's varsity football team hit the road for its last regular season game on Saturday against Williston-Northampton School, securing a regular season league co-championship with a 43-7 victory over the Wildcats.
The Bruins set the tone from their first offensive drive, as they marched down the field strategically until senior quarterback Blake Hebert, as he has done multiple times this season, broke off a 45-yard rushing touchdown to open the scoring. The defense was able to get the ball back for Hebert and the offense before the first quarter ended thanks to a forced fumble by sophomore Madsen Ehrhart recovered by senior Henry Johnson. 7-0 Brunswick after one.
Senior Jaylen Noisette, who played both wide receiver and running back for the Bruins, broke a few tackles and made another Wildcat defender miss on his way into the end zone for another Brunswick rushing touchdown. The Bruins' defense forced a three and out on the next drive and left the Wildcats backed up in their own end, allowing the Brunswick offense to take over on the 25-yard line. The offense only needed two plays this time, as Hebert found junior wide receiver Matt Colella open in the end zone for another Bruins touchdown. Senior kicker Oliver Reynolds would tack on two field goals, one from 39 yards and one from 44 yards, to give the Bruins a 27-0 lead headed into halftime.
Williston came out of halftime re-energized with hopes of bringing a new life into their game. They put together a seven-minute opening drive that resulted in a touchdown to cut the lead down to 27-7. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the Bruins' defense did not surrender another point after that. The Brunswick offense was scoreless in the third quarter and relied heavily on the characteristically strong defensive play to keep the Wildcats at bay. The defense forced a safety before the quarter ended, and it was 29-7 Brunswick with 12 minutes to play in the regular season.
Brunswick started the fourth quarter in the middle of an offensive drive that resulted with senior running back Zay Smith adding his name to the stat sheet with a rushing touchdown of his own. Later in the fourth quarter, as the Wildcats were driving down field, the Brunswick defense made a goal line stand, stopping the home team on the one-yard line and handing the ball back to the offense. One play later, Hebert found himself in the end zone again, this time on a 99-yard rushing touchdown to put the exclamation mark on a dominant 48 minutes of football for the Bruins and a 8-1 regular season. 43-7 final from Easthampton, Mass.
The Bruins will face Choate in the top New England bowl game on Saturday, November 16. Kickoff in Wallingford is set for 1 p.m.
