'Wick Captures Prep National Championship

Brunswick defeated Deerfield Academy, 8–7, on Sunday afternoon at Cosby Field to capture the Prep National Championship in front of a packed home crowd.

The Bruins, who had dropped a regular-season matchup to Deerfield earlier in the year, delivered one of their strongest performances of the season when it mattered most. Brunswick jumped out to an early 3–0 lead behind goals from senior captain Matt Colella and sophomore Sawyer Bligh, including a man-down goal from Bligh. Deerfield responded with a run of its own to even the score at 3–3 after one quarter.

Brunswick regained control in the second quarter with goals from Owen Gibbons, Austin Tuttle, Hunter Hanford, and Parker Baras, while senior goalie Will Connell helped anchor the defense as the Bruins carried a 7–4 lead into halftime.

Defense took over in the second half. Deerfield held Brunswick scoreless in the third quarter and cut the lead to 7–6 before tying the game early in the fourth.

With the game level at 7–7 late in regulation, sophomore James McGinity delivered the decisive moment, clearing the ball coast-to-coast and scoring in transition to give Brunswick the lead for good.

Gibbons then won the ensuing faceoff, and Lucas Garcia, Baras, and Luke Perriello helped Brunswick control possession in the closing minute to seal the championship victory.

The title marks just the second Prep National Championship in program history and caps a memorable season for a Bruins team that consistently found ways to win close games throughout the spring.
