After returning from the Next Generation Cup in Barcelona, Spain, Brunswick spent the week getting ready for the Beast of the East Tournament in Reading, Pa., ultimately grinding out five victories en route to the championship.
This large tournament, spread across different locations in Pennsylvania, had five levels of competition, with both Brunswick's A and B teams participating.
Brunswick A competed in Flight 1, the highest and most competitive flight of the tournament. The team overpowered its opponents, winning all four games in commanding fashion:
- Cathedral Prep (13-3)
- North Penn (13-4)
- North Allegheny (16-7)
- Wilson High School (12-4)
These victories propelled the Bruins into the championship game, a highly anticipated late-night showdown against their familiar rivals, Greenwich High School, on Saturday evening.
The championship game began with both teams trading early goals. But Brunswick quickly gained momentum and surged to a 6-2 lead by the end of the first quarter, thanks in part to sharp shooting from Jackson Shaw ’28. From there, the Bruins never looked back. They extended their lead to 11-2 by halftime and to 15-4 by the end of the third quarter. ’Wick finished the game with three more goals, securing an 18-5 victory to claim the title.
Brunswick B, meanwhile, fought hard in Flight 2, the highest level a second ’Wick team has ever competed in at Beast of the East. This young squad, primarily composed of underclassmen, embraced the challenge.
Their first game against host school Wissahickon High School was tough from the start, with the Bruins jumping into the pool with no warm-up due to traffic. They still battled to a 6-6 tie at halftime but eventually fell 11-9. Shortly afterward, they bounced back with a strong 15-5 win over Upper Perk. Placing third in their group on Friday night moved Brunswick B down to Flight 3 for the remainder of the tournament.
Feeling rested and more prepared on Saturday, Brunswick B played a competitive match against Reading, winning 17-13. After a brief recharge, the Bruins faced Lawrenceville in their final match. Though the young Bruins made adjustments each quarter and fought hard, they could not quite pull off the win, losing 14-11. Nevertheless, it was a valuable learning experience for the B team, which gained confidence and skills throughout the weekend.
Both Brunswick’s A and B teams now look ahead to next weekend's annual Cardinal Tournament, where they will once again face off against Greenwich High School.
