Squash Team Tops Haverford on Senior Night
On Senior Night on Friday at Stephens Squash Center, the Bruins rolled to a convincing 7-0 win over Haverford School.
All eight Brunswick seniors – Will Newman, Oliver Velasco, Johan Hodgson, Henry Raine, Anden Boulan, Jesse Chung, Eric Lorenz, and Subir Garg – played together in what was a celebration of four years of dedication to the squash team.
Playing up several spots in the lineup for the day, Chung, Lorenz, and Garg would have tough matches at 8, 9, and 11, respectively. Chung and Garg both battled valiantly, but ultimately fell in five games to their Haverford opponents. Lorenz won convincingly in three games.
Meanwhile, Anden Boulan, Thomas Carney, and Johan Hodgson took to the courts first with the goal of making a strong start to the match for Brunswick. At #7, Boulan's veteran experience showed against a young, up-and-coming Haverford opponent, and he relied on smart, consistent squash on his way to a 3-0 win. Carney had a tighter match against his opponent, but in the end, his game proved too solid and he carried the #5 match, 3-0. Hodgson battled hard and though he dropped the third game, he used the energy of a big crowd behind the brown court to fuel his 3-1 win for 'Wick at #3.
Jackson Pastel, Henry Raine, and Oliver Velasco were up for the Bruins in the next slate of matches. Pastel ran around the court with the confidence of someone who had total command over his game and had no problem dispatching his Haverford opponent at #6. With the fourth win and match secured for Brunswick, Raine still found himself in a tough duel against a veteran player from Haverford; nevertheless, Raine prevailed 3-0 after some hard-fought games. On the brown court, Velasco secured the sixth win for Brunswick after displaying some commanding and precise squash on his way to a 3-1 win at #2.
With everything all wrapped up, all that was left to do was enjoy the rematch of two of the best high school squash players in the country, as Will Newman took the court to face Haverford's Aiden Chiang. Though Chiang had won the fixture at Haverford in December, it was all Newman on this night, as the senior played what looked to be some of the most dominant squash of his career.
It was a great night for Brunswick, and in particular a great night for the seniors. The team has a tough match coming up next Saturday at Taft.
