Brunswick earned a road victory on Saturday at Kent, beating the hosts by a score of 3-1.
The Bruins put themselves in a hole early, as a missed clearance on a back pass in the fifth minute to sophomore GK Michael Attubato was easily deposited by a Kent striker, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Credit to Attubato and the whole squad for keeping their composure and committing to the Brunswick style of play. The next 30 minutes was a back-and-forth battle between the teams, with both sides having chances toward goal.
'Wick earned the equalizer in the 37th minute. In his first varsity minutes of the season, senior defender Whim Nook won a clearance in the air near midfield, which landed to Marcus Matitia '25, who played a through ball to senior captain Will Higgs to push past the Kent GK and into the goal.
With momentum on the Bruins' side to start the second half, the visitors put the Kent defensive line on their heels with constant pressure from all directions.
Junior John Buttafuoco headed in a throw-in from Higgs in the 59th minute to make it 2-1 and nearly scored a second after hitting the post on a breakaway just one minute later. In the 70th minute, Higgs earned another assist playing a through ball from the right endline to classmate Agustin Grether, who deposited it with confidence and style into the back of the net.
Brunswick had a few other chances to score, but also needed to play solid defense on counter attacks in the closing minutes of the match. Along with centerbacks Ollie Leonard '25 and Ray Foley '27, seniors Sebi Medina and Franco Fajardo played a big part in keeping Kent out of the net in the second half. Junior midfielder Fernando Uyaguari also played impactful minutes, with Judah Viders '27 being effective in both defensive and midfield roles.
Attubato was only called on to make one proper save for the day but collected a number of through-balls to halt attacking opportunities by Kent; he also contributed a few big punts in the second half to help stretch out the offensive attack.
Now 3-4-1 on the season, the Bruins hope to get to 0.500 against Trinity-Pawling on Carroll Field on Wednesday afternoon.
