Soccer Secures Season's First Victory

Brunswick earned its first victory of the soccer season on Monday, beating local FAA rival Greens Farms Academy by a score of 4-2.

This was a battle of set pieces, with all six tallies of the afternoon coming from a dead-ball situation.

Brunswick got on the board first, when Patrick O'Donohue was fouled inside the box in the 15th minute in an attempt to settle a deep cross from the right side. The senior striker buried the ensuing PK past the GFA goalkeeper.

Greens Farms began to put pressure on our back four and capitalized on two penalties from the Bruins: the first off a free kick from 25 yards out (34th minute) and again on a PK earned in the 43rd minute. It’s worth noting that junior GK Josh Katz made the initial save on the penalty kick, but a GFA striker was there to deposit the rebound.

The Bruins found the equalizer right before the halftime whistle, as senior captain Ollie Leonard knocked in a loose ball in front of the goal following a corner kick from freshman striker Luke Nardis.

Following an adjustment in formation at halftime, ’Wick took control of the match: defending confidently, possessing well through the midfield, and getting the ball wide to attacking players for opportunities toward the GFA goal.

O'Donohue queued up the next two tallies, both via corner kicks from the left side in the 55th and 57th minutes: the first of which being far-post for striker Matias DeBono '26 to head into the goal, and the second bending around the near-post and right into the goal.

Despite a number of quality chances that were thwarted by the GFA keeper in the remaining 30-plus minutes of play, the score remained 4-2 in Brunswick’s favor to the final whistle.

Junior defender Declan Moran had a strong showing at right back, along with midfielders Will Higgs '25, Theo Perkins '25, Marcus Matita '25, and Nando Uyaguari '26. Senior Iggy Miranda also played quality minutes in an attacking role.

Katz got his first “W” of the season between the pipes, making four saves and coming out to claim a few dangerous crosses in both halves.

The Bruins travel to Loomis on Wednesday.
