Brunswick earned its first positive result of WNEPSSA Class A play on Saturday afternoon on Carroll Field, with an exciting 4-4 draw against Deerfield.
It was another slow start for the Bruins, as Deerfield capitalizing on their opportunities and deposited three goals past sophomore GK Michael Attubato in the 20th, 24th, and 32nd minutes – all of the goals coming on the end of fast-break chances.
With 10 minutes left in the first half, Head Coach Danny Simpson shifted formation and personnel on the pitch, immediately opening more attacking opportunities for ’Wick offense. The home team got its first tally in the 39th minute, with captain Will Higgs '25 heading home a corner kick from Matias DeBono '26.
The second half was back and forth to start, with both teams having chances on goal in the first few minutes of the period. Two more set pieces from the left by DeBono in the 56th and 59th minutes evened the scoreline – the first a corner kick that he buried without help, and the second syncing up with Higgs again on a free kick to head into the net.
It only took one minute for Deerfield to reclaim the lead, working the ball past Brunswick’s defensive line and sneaking a shot by Attubato to make it 4-3.
This lead didn't last long for the visitors as the Bruins drew even once again in the 64th minute. Building up from the right side, Higgs laid off a ball for senior Theo Perkins to send toward goal, which deflected off Justo Iraola '27 and landed at the feet of senior Franco Fajardo at the top of the box. Fajardo took one touch and confidently deposited the ball to the bottom left-hand side of the goal past the Deerfield GK.
The remaining 25 minutes saw both teams have opportunities to take the lead, but the score would remain 4-4 at the closing whistle.
Senior Patrick O'Donohue had another solid game in an attacking midfield position, producing a number of chances on net and putting constant pressure on Deerfield's defensive line. In the back, Ollie Leonard '25, Declan Moran '26, and Judah Viders '27 all played quality and impactful minutes defensively.
Attubato had his first complete game as a varsity GK, making five saves on the day.
Brunswick is at Avon on Wednesday and hosts Frederick Gunn on Saturday.
