Second Half Surge Propels Bruins to Homecoming Win

Brunswick hosted Phillips Andover on Saturday for Homecoming on Cosby Field and made the alumni in attendance proud with a 42-7 win.

This game started differently than the rest of the Bruins' games all season; a quick three and out on offense and then a touchdown for Andover on its first drive of the game. However, the characteristically dominant Brunswick defense made sure this was the only time Andover put points on the board the entire game. Trailing for the first time all season, Brunswick reset itself after the first quarter — 7-0 Andover.

The Brunswick offense bounced back on its next drive of the game with its first of six touchdowns on the day. Freshman running back Colt Inman capped off a 14-play drive with his first varsity touchdown. After the defense, once again, forced Andover to go three and out, and a blocked punt by senior defensive end Arnez Dowe, the Brunswick offense got the ball back deep in Andover territory. Senior quarterback Blake Hebert led a quick three-play drive that ended with a quarterback keeper for the second Bruins score of the game — 14-7 Brunswick at the half.

Andover deferred the coin toss at the start of the game and received the ball to start the second half, but another three and out set the Bruins offense up on Andover's half of the field. Hebert found junior wide receiver Matt Colella open and then watched as Colella made a few Andover players miss on his way into the endzone. One drive later, senior running back Zay Smith joined the touchdown party with his first of two rushing TDs on the day. His second came later in the third quarter and put the Bruins up 35-7 after three.

Late in the fourth quarter, Hebert added six more points to the scoreboard with his second rushing touchdown of the game. Brunswick put forth a dominant performance in front of a packed crowd of alumni, students, parents, and community members on a beautiful Homecoming Saturday.

The Bruins will host Phillips Exeter Academy on Saturday, October 26, at 2 p.m. in their next game.
