The cross country season had its culminating moment on Saturday, as the Bruins returned to the site of their only defeat to race in the Division I New England Championship on the campus of Hotchkiss School. Brunswick ultimately placed ninth.
Hopes were high for a best-ever finish as the Bruins had bested the odds all season long, managing to keep their roster of only seven runners completely healthy through the regular season campaign on the way to a ’Wick record for most victories.
Brunswick’s best were indeed ready. Nathan Lee and Teddy Hojlo would live up to the hype, placing third and fourth overall in a deeply talented field where the top five all broke the decade-old course record.
But the statistics finally caught up to ’Wick, as several members of the team battled sickness in the lead-up week, and the Bruins’ usual third runner would sit out this last race due to a late-season injury.
Brunswick placed ninth as a team on this day, with any disappointed thoughts of what might have been quickly replaced by appreciation for the feat that Lee and Hojlo had accomplished.
Celebration of them was accompanied by renewed determination, as the entire roster returns next year and the Bruins have their eyes on the prize.
