Giordano Nets Game-Winner at Staples

Brunswick defeated Staples High School, 9–8, on Thursday in Westport, rallying from an early deficit to extend its winning streak in a tightly contested matchup.

Staples came out fast in rainy conditions, building a 5–1 lead in the opening quarter. The Bruins responded behind steady defensive play from captains John Buttafuoco and Jake Greene, while Lucas Garcia, Sawyer Bligh, Austin Tuttle, and David Giuriceo helped chip away at the deficit.

With Staples controlling possession and slowing the pace without a shot clock — often holding the ball for four minutes per possession — Brunswick capitalized on a late first-half opportunity. After forcing a turnover in the final seconds, Timmy Hall sparked a fast break that led to a Tuttle goal with 0.7 seconds remaining, tying the game at five at halftime.

The second half remained tight, with both teams trading goals. Trailing 8–7 in the fourth quarter, Hunter Hanford delivered a key equalizer to make it all even yet again at eight. Late in regulation, Brunswick’s defense came up with a critical stop while down a man, highlighted by a save from Will Connell.

Following a timeout, head coach Dave Bruce drew up a decisive play that led to Rick Giordano scoring the go-ahead goal with 40 seconds remaining, sealing the 9–8 victory.

Brunswick returns home to Cosby Field to face Westminster School on Saturday.
