Brunswick Edges Exeter in Homecoming Classic

The Homecoming crowd at Cosby Field was treated to an unforgettable afternoon on Saturday, as Brunswick edged Exeter, 44–43, in a game that featured big plays, late drama, and a storybook finish.

Exeter controlled the early moments, jumping out to a 14–0 lead in the first quarter. But with 15 seconds left in the period, the Bruins finally broke through with a touchdown to cut the deficit in half, 14–7, after one.

Brunswick’s defense found its rhythm in the second quarter, keeping Exeter off the scoreboard while the offense mounted a comeback. A field goal midway through the quarter and a late touchdown capped a sharp two-minute drill, sending the Bruins into halftime with a 17–14 lead.

Momentum stayed with the hosts to open the second half. After forcing Exeter into a lengthy, scoreless drive, Brunswick needed just one play to strike again, extending the lead to 24–14. Exeter responded with a touchdown to close the gap, but the Bruins answered right back before the end of the third quarter, pushing the margin to 30–21.

What followed was a fourth quarter worthy of Homecoming Weekend. Exeter clawed within two points early in the frame, only for Brunswick to respond with another score, going up 37–28 with 4:28 to play. The visitors then mounted a furious rally, scoring twice in the final minutes — once with 2:40 remaining and again with just 57 seconds left — to take a 43–37 lead.

Down six with less than a minute on the clock and two timeouts, Brunswick’s offense delivered when it mattered most. The Bruins marched down the field in a final, determined drive, capping it off with a game-tying touchdown with three seconds remaining. A premature celebration drew a 15-yard penalty, turning the potential extra point into a 35-yard attempt — but the kick was true, splitting the uprights and sending the Cosby Field crowd into jubilation.

Brunswick’s defense held firm on the final kickoff, sealing an instant-classic win to ignite Homecoming celebrations.

The Bruins return to Cosby Field next Saturday, November 1, at 5:00 p.m. for Senior Day against Deerfield Academy.
