Brunswick saved its best performance for last in their 2024 campaign, beating Westminster, 5-0, to celebrate Senior Night and cap off a 10-win season on Saturday.
Festivities were held prior to kickoff to honor the team's 11 graduating members: Agustin Grether, Gianfranco Fajardo, Will Higgs, Ollie Leonard, Marcus Matita, Sebi Medina, Inacio Mirando, Wim Nook, Patrick O'Donohue, Theo Perkins, and Tom Rockman.
Coach Forester led a passionate pregame speech in the moments before kickoff, setting the tone for what would be a memorable night on Cosby Field.
The Bruins got off to a fast start, taking a 1-0 lead in just the third minute: O'Donohue received a pass down the far left side, took two touches and sent a cross into the box for Higgs to head past the Westy GK and into the net. Over the next 15 minutes, the Bruins had appeared to claim two more tallies, but both of them were called back due to close offsides calls.
Higgs got his second goal of the night (and team-leading 16th for the season) in the 34th minute. Sophomore defender Judah Viders found himself just outside the box on the receiving end of a long pass, which he sent out wide for junior Matias DeBono to play into the box for Higgs to knock home.
While the score line remained 2-0 for nearly 30 minutes after this, 'Wick continued to produce quality chances on goal. O'Donohue made it 3-0 in the 64th minute, collecting a pass near midfield, taking a few big touches through the Westy defense, and hitting a confident strike to the upper right corner of the goal.
O'Donohue helped set up the next tally, once again finding himself space in the attacking third before laying the ball off to Higgs to strike on goal; while the Westy GK would make the initial save, Medina was there to knock in the rebound (and score the first goal of his three-year varsity career).
Matitia made his contribution to the scoreline in the 81st minute, delivering a corner kick into the box which was ultimately knocked into the net with the help of Leonard and Medina.
Goalkeepers Josh Katz '26 (60 minutes, five saves) and Michael Attubato '27 (30 minutes, four saves) combined in net for our fifth shutout of the season.
Playing quality minutes next to Leonard defensively was Nook and sophomore Ray Foley. Inacio, Franco, Perkins, and Grether all put in solid showings in the midfield, helping to contribute to the complete-game effort on all phases of play.
The Bruins ended the season 10-7-1, which is the program's second best mark in Head Coach Danny Simpson's tenure. Saturday's win was his 60th with Brunswick.
