Brunswick School’s football team kicked off the 2024 season with a thrilling 30-0 victory over Northeast Prep League rival Cheshire Academy on Friday night on Robert L. Cosby Field.
The Bruins, eager to avenge last season's heartbreaking loss to Cheshire Academy, showcased their strength and enthusiasm on their home turf at Edwards Campus on King Street.
The game was marked by a dominant performance from the Bruins, who seized the momentum with 16 points in the final two minutes of the first half. The team carried this energy into the second half, securing a convincing win in front of a spirited crowd.
Brunswick’s scoring began with a three-yard touchdown run by senior Patrick Hiebert, followed by a recovery of a Cheshire fumble that led to another Hiebert touchdown. A safety added to the Bruins' advantage, making the score 16-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, senior quarterback Blake Hebert connected with junior wide receiver Matt Colella for a 46-yard touchdown, extending the Bruins' lead. The final touchdown came in the fourth quarter, with senior running back Zay Smith scoring on a five-yard run after a key interception by senior safety Ethan Long.
The offensive line, which is anchored by senior Matty Augustine, junior Owen Swenson, junior Sean Berntsen, senior Sam Barsanti, and junior Rowan Ahrens, provided a significant push up front for the Bruins’ running game. The group also provided a lot of protection for Hebert, giving him time to pass.
The Bruins’ defense was equally formidable, with a relentless effort that stifled Cheshire Academy’s offense. Key defensive plays included a safety by senior lineman Henry Johnson and multiple turnovers that kept the Cats off balance. The defensive unit, led by senior captain EJ Perez and fellow classmate Jaylen Pray, demonstrated strong tackling and communication throughout the game.
Looking ahead, the Bruins will face familiar foe Salisbury School in their next Northeast Prep matchup on the road Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
