Brunswick will have a total of four rowers racing in four different boat classes at the 2024 World Rowing Senior, Under 23, and Under 19 Championships to be held in St. Catherines, Canada, from August 18-25.
George Kapp '26, Reed Eddy '25, Mark Kakoma '24, and Harrison Azrak '21 have each made a national team for the first time.
Eddy and Kapp are the first Brunswick rowers to be on the United States Junior National Team since 1999 when Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss '00 raced in the U19 Men's Coxed Pair event in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The Winklevoss brothers went on to represent the United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
Azrak and Kakoma are the first Brunswick alumni to race at the U23 World Championships since 2013 when Matt Podlesak '13 was in the U23 Lightweight Men's Quadruple Sculls in Linz, Austria, and 2012 when Chan Mahaney '10 raced in the U23 Men's Lightweight Pair in Trakai, Lithuania.
Kapp won the US National Team Trials in the U19 Men's Double Sculls in June to secure his spot on the United States Junior National Team. The rising junior sits in bow of the double that won the trials by a large margin and also met the competitive time standard set by USRowing to qualify to represent the USA at Worlds. Earlier in June, Kapp won the USRowing Youth National Championships in the U17 single by an impressive margin. In the fall, Kapp was the youngest competitor to earn a medal in any Youth (high school) category at the Head of the Charles Regatta.
Eddy was selected to the United States U19 Men's Quadruple Sculls. The rising senior will row in the two-seat of the American quad. His crew continues to train with most of the US Junior National Team at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in California, where he has been since early July. Eddy holds the school's all-time ergometer record for 2000m, which he set this June. Talented in sweeps and sculls, Eddy took 2nd at the 2023 Head of the Charles Regatta in the 4+ and 2nd at the 2022 and 2023 Hoffman Challenge in the 1x. Eddy is now the first Brunswick rower to earn a seat on the United States Junior National Team through Selection Camp.
Kakoma will be representing his native Zambia in the U23 Men's Single Sculls. Kakoma won several medals in both sweep and sculling boats at Brunswick and has been recruited to row at Northeastern University in the fall. While at Brunswick, Kakoma was able to spend more time in the single scull than he has previously and is currently training locally at the New York Athletic Club in preparation for his first international sculling race.
Azrak will be representing the USA in the U23 Lightweight Men's Pair after winning the US National Team Trials in June. Azrak and his pair partner from the University of Pennsylvania had to work hard in the hot and humid conditions to win the trials and meet the time standard set by USRowing to qualify to represent the USA at Worlds. Azrak has earned medals two years in a row at the IRA National Championships in the Varsity Lightweight Eight on what has been a historic run for Penn. Azrak, along with Peter Kapp '22, both former captains at Brunswick, helped the Quakers win the Jope Cup this May (overall team points trophy at the Eastern Sprints) for the first time since 1967.
