Bruins Open Hockey Season, Skate to Tie at St. George's

In a battle of two teams from last season's Elite 8 Tournament, Brunswick and St. George's skated to a 3-3 tie on Saturday afternoon in Middletown, Rhode Island, in a tightly fought hockey contest.

The Bruins came out firing and took the early lead on a nifty deke to the backhand by junior Mason St. Louis after a smooth entry and passing exchange between his linemates and fellow classmates Joey Salandra and Owen Gibbons – 1-0 'Wick at the first break.

The visitors extended their advantage to three by the 11:57 mark of the second – as Salandra sniped one to the left side as he cut to his right at the top of the slot and sophomore Keegan Kazan finished off a nice passing play from junior Ben Lombardi.

But the Dragons – an older and heavy team with some real talent and speed from their backend – didn't go away and gained some momentum with a shorthanded tally before the end of the second, ultimately keeping the pressure on going into the third and tying the game with just 2:36 remaining.

Overtime was largely uneventful and the two squads shook hands deadlocked at three.

Shots favored the home team at 28-20 – and junior goaltender Dylan Lee-Stack was excellent for Brunswick between the pipes. (Speaking of iron, the Bruins hit four posts throughout the 59 minutes of action.)

Loomis next at Hartong on Wednesday, December 4.
