Brunswick returned home from Avon Old Farms on Wednesday afternoon following a hard-fought defeat by a score of 2-1.
The two teams were well matched, with the hosts ultimately doing a better job converting their opportunities on goal.
Avon got its first tally in the 23rd minute, as the Bruins were unable to secure and clear a high cross that was eventually knocked past sophomore GK Michael Attubato.
’Wick didn’t generate much offense of its own in the first frame, but the Bruins defended well and Attubato was called on to make one diving save to his right before heading into the break.
The deficit jumped to two just three minutes into the second half, as once again Avon took advantage of a ball in Brunswick’s defensive third and converted a nice strike from just inside the 18-yard box.
The Bruins kept at it up front and started to wear down the Avon back line — seniors Theo Perkins, Will Higgs, and Patrick O’Donohue all produced chances on goal that required saves from the Avon GK. John Buttafuoco ’26 also had a great chance to cut the lead in the 73rd minute, heading a cross just over the bar.
Brunswick didn’t quit and got on the board in the 89th minute on a sequence that began with a throw-in from the right sideline deep in Avon’s defensive third. Matias DeBono ’26 threw the ball to Augustine Grether’s ’25 feet just outside the corner of the box, who found O’Donohue near the top of the 18. The senior created space with two touches and laid the ball off for classmate Inacaio Miranda to bury with confidence into the back of the net. The game ended shortly after with a final score of 2-1 in favor of the Winged Beavers.
Senior captain Ollie Leonard continues to be the backbone and soul of the Brunswick defense, coming up huge to thwart a number of attacking chances by Avon.
Attubato had another fine showing in goal, making six saves on the day and coming out to claim a number of dangerous crosses and long balls in the second half.
