Brunswick was defeated by Taft, 4-0, under the lights of the Rhinos’ new turf field on Saturday evening in Watertown.
The hosts had a skilled and deep roster of players from all over the world and wasted no time getting on the board. Within the first five minutes, Taft orchestrated a series of passes in behind our back four, which led to two goals on 1-v-1's against senior GK Phil Stabinksy.
The Bruins settled down and held their own defensively and in the midfield. Junior midfielders Will Higgs and Theo Perkins both had opportunities on goal in the first half: Higgs narrowly missed the top corner on a free kick from 25 yards out, and Perkins had a crack on goal from just outside the box that required a nice low save from the Taft keeper. The 2-0 scoreline would remain going into halftime.
Taft added to its lead in the second frame with tallies in the 49th and 60th minutes.
Stabinsky (11 saves) settled down in net after the first two goals, ultimately playing a solid match. He was called upon numerous times in the second half to make big saves and was also confident collecting and clearing corner kicks late in the game to keep the score 4-0.
A handful of other players are worthy of recognition for their efforts: Defensively, captain Ollie Leonard '25 and Charlie Perkins '26 played all 90 minutes at the centerback position, and defender Whim Nook '25 came off the bench early in the first half and stayed on the pitch for the rest of the match. Captain Tyler Quake '24 also never came off the field, splitting his time at the wing and midfield positions. Senior attackers Luke James and Kieran Raker both put in good work up front, keeping Taft's centerbacks busy and under duress.
